Novelist Anthony Horowitz described Syros’s main harbour of Ermoupoli. "A world straight out of a 19th-century opera with little traffic and no tacky tourist shops to spoil the illusion". He isn’t wrong. Syros is lined with Venetian and Ottoman townhouses. These host contemporary galleries on one storey, restaurants downstairs and cafés out front.
