Even the most hardcore city dwellers of the United States are forced to gaze in wonder when confronted with the sheer natural beauty of their homeland. From the windswept beaches of California to the crevasse-riddled Glaciers of Alaska, this is a country that is vast, diverse, and breathtakingly beautiful. What’s more, some of the most epic vistas and varied wildlife is to be found in the coastal regions, making exploring by superyacht all the more rewarding.
“More people are looking for something different these days” says Tamsin Priestley. “At the moment, it’s less about visiting the same old beach clubs and more about using your yacht as a platform to unlock new experiences or see incredible natural sights. And, with some good planning and a talented crew on board, you can really build a unique itinerary without having to go across the world.
Hume Jones agrees. “When most people think about adventure charter they picture some far-off place –Antarctica or a remote island in the south Pacific. But more and more, our Clients are realizing that you don’t have to go too far afield to have an absolutely incredible experience.”
Y.CO offers some exciting summer yacht charter itineraries for the United States, and with experiences ranging from horse-riding through Alaska’s Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park to a private track day at California’s Laguna Seca, there’s something for every kind of charter guest. “I think the variety of options for yacht charter in the USA surprises people” explains Tamsin. “The country covers almost every climate, meaning you can do anything from laid-back beach hopping to partying in the Florida Keys, to a cultural exploration of New England or a safari charter in Alaska.”
“I’ve booked charters in Alaska, New England, Maine, Florida and the US Virgin Islands” Tamsin continues. “New England is my favourite. The scenery is beautiful, the sailing fantastic and the seafood is simply some of the best in the world. Easy cruising distances between islands, plenty to do ashore whether it be a winery visit, museum tour or dining on lobster at a waterfront restaurant the area is steeped in history and feels a million miles away from mainland USA.”
With such a wealth of experiences on offer for the adventurous traveler, it’s difficult to understand why the USA has been slow to become a mainstay yachting destination. “Because only US flagged boats (or those that are licensed) can operate commercially in US waters, availability here has traditionally been more limited than other cruising regions” explains Tamsin. “Plus, the season is relatively short in Alaska and New England, so there is competition for the best dates. But I wouldn’t let this put you off. We always tell our Clients to book early; we have access to all the best yachts in the area, even those that are off-market, and so getting in early means we can send you a personalized collection and help you find the one that’s perfect for you. Not only that but having the time to plan ahead gives you even greater choice when it comes to arranging unmissable experiences as part of the itinerary.”
A land of opportunity for US based charter guests hoping to vacation closer to home this summer, the United States also promises wider appeal for future seasons. “It’s going to be big this summer with domestic (US) travel, but demand is rising from international travellers too, with borders opening up again" notes Tamsin. Should this be a concern for the intrepid adventurer, hoping to escape the crowds? Our charter team thinks not. “The USA is vast – there are still parts of it that receive less visitors than the international space station” she laughs. “So no matter how popular it becomes – there’s a piece of solitude for everyone.”
