My Story

I got into yachting almost by accident. After university, I wasn’t entirely sure what I wanted to do, so I found a job on a sailing boat and spent two years sailing around the Caribbean. When I came back to the UK, I realised I could actually make a career out of it, which seemed considerably more appealing (to me) than most of the other options at the time.

That was nearly 30 years ago. Since then, I’ve advised clients on charters all over the world and been lucky enough to travel on yachts in some pretty far-flung places myself. Seeing destinations first-hand gives you a good feel for what works, what doesn’t and what is actually worth doing.

Most of my clients are short on time, so I try to keep things simple: find the right yacht, give honest advice on where to go and don’t try to cram too much into a week.

After nearly three decades doing this, I still think travelling by yacht is one of the best ways to see the world.

Beyond Yachting

Most of the things I enjoy involve getting out of the city and into the wild.

I love sailing, watersports, keeping fit and travelling, whether that’s by land or sea. I’m also very happy cooking over a fire, eating and drinking with friends and family, and ideally doing all of that somewhere near the water.

WHAT DO CLIENTS MOST OFTEN UNDERESTIMATE ABOUT YOUR AREA OF WORK?

Some clients think yachts are a bit like hotels and don’t always realise the amount of logistics that happen behind the scenes.

There are a lot of moving parts that need to be considered and addressed before a successful charter.

WHAT’S ONE PLACE YOU’D RETURN TO TOMORROW?

French Polynesia. I was fortunate enough go on board one of our yachts there a few years ago. You can anchor in a bay with nobody around for miles, spend the day in the water and end it with a barbecue on the beach. It's such a special place.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR ROLE?

Travelling on yachts in far-flung corners of the world and seeing first-hand why yacht charter is something everyone needs to do.

IF YOU WEREN’T WORKING IN YACHTING, WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING?

I’d be independently wealthy, sailing a lovely yacht around the world with a fabulous crew.

WHAT’S ONE THING STILL ON YOUR BUCKET LIST?

I’d like to sail across the Pacific and visit Antarctica.

What advice would I give for first-time charter clients?

Don't try to do too much. A week goes quickly, and the whole point of being on a yacht is having the freedom to stop somewhere you like and enjoy it. You don’t need to tick off every anchorage on the map.
