My Story

Growing up around the water in the south of England, I was always drawn to boats and eventually found my way into yachting, first on board sailing and motor yachts and later ashore. Along the way, I worked across merchant shipping, including oil and chemical tankers, before moving into yacht management.

One of the biggest lessons I've learned is that no two yacht operations are alike. Every vessel has its own crew structure, ownership requirements, specialist equipment and way of working. That's probably why I enjoy solving problems that don't have an obvious answer. Whether it's investigating an incident, understanding why a process isn't working as intended or helping a captain navigate a compliance challenge, I'm always interested in getting to the root cause rather than treating the symptom.

I don't see compliance as paperwork. Done properly, it provides the framework that allows busy yacht operations to run safely and efficiently. For me, the challenge is finding the right balance: creating systems that are practical enough to be used every day, while giving crews the support they need when it matters most.

Beyond Yachting

Outside work, I’m happiest doing something active and preferably outdoors. Sailing and watersports have always been part of my life, and I like travelling with my family and discovering places as we go rather than having every detail planned in advance.

I also really enjoy making and fixing things. There’s something satisfying about finishing a job yourself and being able to see exactly what you’ve achieved at the end of it.

WHAT’S THE BIGGEST MISCONCEPTION PEOPLE HAVE ABOUT YOUR ROLE?

That a Safety Management System is just paperwork.

A good system should actually make a yacht safer and easier to operate. The challenge is keeping it streamlined enough to be useful while still giving the crew something they can rely on when things get busy.

WHAT’S THE MOST ADVENTUROUS THING YOU’VE DONE?

Snorkelling with humpback whales in Mauritius.

It happened completely by chance, which probably made it even better. Seeing them up close in their natural habitat was amazing.

WHAT’S BEEN YOUR MOST VALUABLE LESSON FROM WORKING IN YACHTING?

Never assume a yacht is simpler to manage than a commercial ship.

I came from merchant shipping and oil and chemical tankers, and quickly learnt that every superyacht brings its own mix of crew structures, specialist equipment, owner requirements and unusual operations. The rules don’t always fit neatly, so the systems have to work around the reality of the yacht.

WHAT’S YOUR IDEA OF A TERRIBLE HOLIDAY?

A package holiday with every activity already arranged.

I enjoy exploring new places and discovering what there is to see and experience, rather than having everything planned in advance.

WHAT KIND OF PROBLEM DO YOU MOST ENJOY SOLVING?

A compliance issue or accident where you need to understand the underlying cause.

I enjoy working closely with captains and officers to work out what happened, then putting improvements in place that reduce the risk of it happening again.

IF YOU WEREN’T WORKING IN YACHTING, WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING?

Probably something hands-on, like landscaping.

I enjoy working with my hands and get a lot of satisfaction from completing a project myself. Spending my days outdoors and staying active would suit me very well.
