Bahamas Yacht Charter
The holidays may be over, but the real magic of the Bahamas yacht charter season begins in January. While Christmas and New Year dates are typically booked up months in advance, the quieter months that follow — January through March — are arguably the best time to experience this island nation. With steady trade winds, protected anchorages, and hundreds of cays waiting to be explored, it’s the ultimate winter yacht charter destination for families, friends, and anyone looking to trade grey skies for turquoise waters. Sharing his first hand experience as both a former Captain and Y.CO Yacht Sales and Purchase Specialist, Jamie Farnborough talks us through why this period is the best time to charter in the Bahamas.
When to go
According to Jamie, the early months of the year are unrivalled:
“In recent years, the Bahamas has become one of the most popular charter destinations during the winter season. I would always recommend the Bahamas over the Windward Islands, particularly in the early months of the year. The northeasterly trade winds or “Christmas Winds” begin in late December and continue through to late March and thanks to the unique positioning of the Bahamian archipelago, there is almost an unlimited choice of beautiful and protected anchorages. Captains can consistently deliver outstanding charters without concern for heavy seas or challenging winds during these months.”
This combination of weather, calm seas, and choice of anchorages makes this period a golden window for chartering.
The Vibe
“The Bahamas has always had an authentic charm with a very relaxed feel. The locals have always been more than welcoming especially in the Exuma’s and Abacos islands.” Shares Jamie.
Here, life slows down. The pace is dictated by the tides, the sunsets, and the day’s adventures, from water sports to beach barbecues.
Cruising Grounds
With so many regions to choose from — Exumas, Eleuthera, Nassau, the Abacos — Jamie has a clear favourite:
“For me, it must be the Exuma’s. They have everything you could dream of in a holiday, from a lazy afternoon on a remote sandy cay, parasol overhead, cocktail and book in hand, to swimming with pigs or diving into some of the clearest waters with vibrant marine life.”
The Exumas are also a watersports paradise: scuba diving, fishing, kitesurfing, and foiling are world-class here.
Family-Friendly Escapes
For families eyeing midterm breaks as a chance to chase the sun:
“The Bahamas is perfect for families looking for a winter escape over the midterm breaks. The flight connections from the U.S.A are short which makes it very convenient. Children love playing in calm lagoons or on deserted beaches that feel like your own private island. Teenagers are always drawn to watersports… For those who prefer a slower pace, there are quiet anchorages, sunset cocktails, spa treatments, and the joy of watching the family reconnect.”
It’s the kind of destination where everyone finds their rhythm, whether that’s adrenaline-fuelled action or total relaxation.
Secret Spot
Jamie doesn’t hesitate when asked for his favourite off-the-beaten-path spot:
“Conception Island has to be my favourite. It’s completely uninhabited, no resorts, no towns, nothing but nature. The diving here is unbelievable, with wall dives that honestly rival what you would find in the South Pacific… The beaches are still absolutely pristine and the whole place feels untouched, just as Christopher Columbus found it.”
It’s a reminder that the Bahamas (along with its famous swimming pigs) is also home to wild, unspoiled beauty that few destinations can rival.
Bahamas vs. Mediterranean
For guests used to Mediterranean summers, Jamie explains how a Bahamas winter charter stands apart:
“In the Med, the focus is often on glamorous ports, busy beach clubs, and cultural day trips ashore. The Bahamas is a world away from this, it’s all about barefoot luxury and total immersion in nature… Evenings are spent with beach barbecues under the stars, grilling lobster and fish you have caught that day, with the crew serving drinks with only the sound of the ocean and nature around you.”
This is luxury at its most laid back and unpretentious.
While the Caribbean remains a favourite winter destination, Jamie is clear about why the Bahamas deserves the top spot:
“It’s more convenient for travel, the weather is usually better and the Bahamas has just as much if not more to offer than the Caribbean.”
Asked to sum up the Bahamas experience in three words, Jamie doesn’t hesitate:
“Freedom. Beaches. Nature.”
That’s the essence of a Bahamas yacht charter in winter. With perfect conditions, endless activities, and a sense of escape unlike anywhere else, it’s the ultimate luxury escape to brighten the start of the year.
